MARX ON THE PRECIPICE OF UTOPIA
By Chris Matthew Sciabarra
Abstract: This article reviews the first edition of Kevin M. Brien's book, Marx, Reason, and the Art of Freedom (Temple University Press). It argues that Brien presents a systematic and integrated discussion of the relationship between reason and freedom in Marx's thought, uncovering important and often neglected epistemological parallels between Marxist and non-Marxist philosophers. But the book raises questions that challenge the actualizable potential of Marx's project. (It should be noted that in Brien's second edition to this book, he takes note of Sciabarra's review.)
